Setting up your device for the first time
When you first setup your device, your device will be very busy setting everything up for you and you may quickly find that your device battery drains faster than you would expect. Activities such as installing or updating applications, configuring your home screen and settings, adding and synchronizing message and contact information for the first time, transferring information from a previous device, and even just navigating around your new device with the screen on as you get to know your exciting new phone can consume a considerable amount of battery power. Keep this in mind as you allow your device a day or two to settle into its normal battery performance.Charging
Always use an official BlackBerry charger. BlackBerry 10 smartphones require a charger having an output of at least a 750mA to consistently charge the device. Chargers supplying less than 750mA Output may not provide enough power to sustain a charge on the smartphone during heavy use. All BlackBerry branded chargers will print the Output amperage somewhere on the charger. Ensure the Output shown on the charger is at least 750mA. When using a charger, charge for an extended period of time when possible, avoid charging in small increments (for example, less than 15 minutes), and do not leave the smartphone in direct sunlight (for example, your vehicle’s dashboard) or in extremely cold temperatures.Ways that usage can lead to battery drain
Using your device will always consume a bit of battery power, but certain activities can use more battery than others.- Using Navigation or GPS for long periods of time - Using GPS can drain your battery because your device is constantly working to keep your location updated and Navigation keeps your screen on continuously.
- Intensive camera use - Using the flash, taking many photos at once, capturing long videos, or capturing videos at a high resolution rate with the camera can use up battery life as your device processes the information. The Flash feature of the camera will consume battery power when used. To minimize the use of battery power, consider turning off the flash feature of the camera when it is not needed.
- Watching a lot of videos - Being constantly connected to the Internet or watching a bunch of videos so that your screen is on for a long time can drain your battery.
- Playing games - Using a lot of processing power and having your screen on continuously can drain your battery faster.
- Using apps for long periods of time - Being constantly connected to the Internet, having your screen on continuously, or intense gameplay or graphics can drain your battery.
- Phone calls on the move - Talking on the phone when you're in a moving car can drain your battery because your phone needs to transfer between cell towers.
- Spending long periods of time in low cellular coverage – In order for your device to communicate with cell towers which may be a long distance away, your device needs to apply more power to the radio antenna as it ‘yells louder’ so that the far away cell tower can hear your device. The more your device needs to communicate with distant cell towers, the more power your device will need to use to broadcast over those long distances.
- Continuously playing or streaming Music – Continuously playing music or being constantly connected to the Internet can drain your battery.
- Keeping the screen on for long periods of time – Continuously keeping the display on will contribute to drain on your battery.
Display Settings
- Set a shorter time before your screen turns off:
Your sleep setting controls how long it takes for your device's screen to go black when you're not using it. To reduce battery drain when you're not actively using the screen, set a shorter time before your screen turns off.- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Display > Screen Timeout.
- Select 30 seconds or lower to save the most battery life.
- Turn on auto brightness or adaptive brightness:
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Display.
- Move the Brightness slider to the left to make sure the screen brightness is set lower than 50%.
- Configure other screen waking and power saving features:
- Touch Settings > Advanced interactions and consider disabling the Lift to wake and Hold to stay feature
- Touch Settings > Advanced interactions and consider enabling the Flip to save power feature
- Use a Case or Holster. Depending on which of type case or holster is used, putting the BlackBerry 10 smartphone in it may or may not turn off the display. To ensure maximum battery life, use a case that turns off the smartphone's display when holstered. To browse a variety of these cases, visit www.shopblackberry.com or check for availability at a local retailer.
Vibrate and Sound Settings
- You can save battery life by turning off your device's keyboard sound and vibration.
- Touch Settings > Language and Input > Feedback touch the desired keyboard settings, such as BlackBerry Keyboard Settings > Key press feedback and consider disabling the Vibrate on Correction feature and lowering the Keyboard Feedback Volume setting.
- Reduce the device Volume. As with most speakers, the speaker of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone will use more power the louder it is turned up. Turn down the volume on the smartphone with the volume keys on the right side of the smartphone when a higher volume is not needed. To adjust other volume settings on the smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select System Volume or Notifications.
- Configure a Power Efficient Notification Profile. The speaker and vibration components of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone consume energy when used. Consider configuring an energy efficient notification profile that minimizes use of these components by shortening the length of the notification as well as minimizing the number of times that the notification is repeated. The vibration notification requires more power than other notification types, eliminating this notification type all together for an energy efficient notification profile will assist in maximizing battery life. The LED light on the smartphone uses the least amount of energy, so for notification types where this form of notification is sufficient consider using it exclusively. If receiving a lot of notifications overnight, swipe down from the top of the screen after locking the smartphone to enable Bedside Mode which will turn off all notifications overnight.
Wireless Connections
- Disable Wireless Radios when not in use – BlackBerry 10 smartphones feature multiple wireless radios Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC connections. If one or more of these wireless connections is not being used, it is recommended to disable the corresponding radio to prevent it from using battery power. For example, if it is known that no connection will be made to any Bluetooth devices while at home or at a restaurant, a quick way to save some battery life would be to turn off the Bluetooth radio. To review and modify network connections on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select Network Connections. Enabling and disabling the network connections can be actioned through each of the Connections listed on this screen.
- Low Cellular Coverage situations – When in low cellular coverage situations, the BlackBerry 10 smartphone may increase power to the Cellular radio. In locations that have poor cell coverage such as basements, use the Wi-Fi functionality built into the smartphone to connect to available Wi-Fi network. If a cellular connection is not needed while in the low coverage environment, consider turning off the Mobile Network connection. To review and modify network connections on the smartphone, swipe down from the top bezel, tap on the Settings icon, and select Network Connections. Enabling and disabling the network connections can be actioned through each of the Connections listed on this screen.
- No Coverage situations – When in an area without cellular coverage, the BlackBerry 10 smartphone may continue to search for available mobile networks. In locations that have no mobile network coverage such as basements, use the Wi-Fi functionality built into the smartphone to connect to available Wi-Fi network.

Account related battery usage
As more social, email, calendar, and contact related accounts, which synchronize with a server, are added to the device, the more the device will need to reach out to the various servers to exchange information wirelessly. Consider removing accounts that you do not frequently use or change the sync interval to contact the server less frequently. Note: When one or more accounts are added to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, PIM Services may utilize more CPU and battery resources than normal as it downloads the data stored within the account and indexes the data within the BlackBerry 10 OS. The duration of this time may vary depending on the number of the accounts and the amount of information these accounts contain.- To access account settings open the Settings app and touch Accounts. From here, touch the account you wish to configure or remove, and configure the Sync interval to let your device contact the server less frequently, change the Sync timeframe to be 30 days or less to limit the amount of data that the device needs to exchange with the server, or delete the account by touching the trash can icon in the upper left corner.
